Fenestrelle Fort

The Fort of windows 23 rising from the state of Sestriere 3 km on the ridge of the mountain Orsiera covering a drop of 635 meters, is one of the landmarks of Piedmont .
The fortress departed from the highest point (of the valley to Fort 1800 meters above sea level) in 1728 at the behest of Vittorio Amedeo II. It took 122 years because the construction was completed reaching the lowest point, near today's passage of the state (Forte Carlo Alberto by the name of the king who completed the construction in 1850).

The fort was built to defend the new kingdom of Savoy in Piedmont by the French raids even though he was never directly involved in the battles. It was used mainly as a prison camp.

In the Second World War saw several clashes between supporters of the Piedmont Chisone German army. It was finally abandoned by the Italian army in the late '40s.
Since the '90s, thanks to a group of volunteers the Association of Project San Carlo Onlus "the fortification of Chisone has seen a resurgence with a strong cultural and value tourism.

Today Fort Finestrelle has become the symbol of the province of Turin.
